Shaving with this one-of-a-kind straight razor is truly an unparalleled experience. The weight and balance of this masterpiece allow for a smooth and effortless glide across the skin, resulting in a close and comfortable shave. Every single time.
The ritual of honing and stropping the blade before each use adds an element of mindfulness and self-care to the process – a meditative and enjoyable experience.
And, with proper maintenance, this razor can last a lifetime, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly choice. But perhaps the most compelling benefit of the Straight Edge is the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from mastering this traditional technique with such a marvel of craftsmanship. There is simply no other feeling quite like it. Beyond being just a luxurious indulgence, it's a daily ritual that will bring joy and satisfaction for years to come.
The Designer and Master Knife Maker behind the Straight Edge Petr Hofman has long had a high regard in the custom knife space. His design language is forward-looking and combines a deep understanding of materials with extraordinary innovations in the mechanics of his unique pieces.
Petr won the DOVO design competition and subsequently created two unique Straight Edge packages, including a Straight Razor, a shaving brush, and a stand. All parts of the set, including the rivets of the razor, are hand made by Petr in his workshop.
The precise and elaborate handwork of the Straight Edge is truly outstanding and sets it apart from all other shaving tools. The razor is created with the utmost attention to detail and skill, resulting in a beautiful and functional work of art. The process of grinding this unique blade design requires a high level of expertise and dedication. The intricate designs and details on the handle and blade also add a level of elegance and beauty to the tool. The handwork is unmatched in its precision and craftsmanship, making it a truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind shaving tool.
The blade of the Straight Edge is hand-ground out of a forged DOVO blade from the 1960s. It is made of carbon steel with the material number 1.2210, better known as silver steel. In order to achieve a hardness of approximately 61 HRC, the material is heated to over 1,000 degrees celsius and then immediately quenched with a special oil. The subsequent tempering at about 200 degrees celsius gives the blade elasticity and toughness.
The aerospace grade titanium used to manufacture the handle of the Straight Edge, as well as the brush handle and the stand, is a unique material for a number of reasons. First and foremost, titanium is incredibly strong and durable, making it an ideal choice for the handle of a razor that will see regular use. It is also resistant to corrosion and wear, ensuring that the handle will maintain its appearance and function for years to come. Additionally, titanium is lightweight, making it comfortable and easy to hold for long periods of time. Its sleek and modern look also adds a level of sophistication to the overall design of the razor.
During hollow grinding, the straight razor is ground concavely from the back to the cutting edge. This design combines great flexibility with high torsional rigidity in longitudinal form. When the blade is brought to vibrate, you can clearly hear how thin the hollow ground is. The harmonical complex sound is a very elegant and aesthetically pleasing experience.
Your shaving begins with stropping on a leather strop. After you have generously coated your face with shaving lather or shaving oil, grab the blade so that the open handle points away from you. With your free hand, gently hold your skin to form as straight a surface as possible. You set the blade at about 30° angle and smoothly pull it down over your face. First, start going with the hair, and then finish by going against the growth direction.
Most straight razors are made of carbon steel. To avoid stains, rinse your blade with warm water after shaving. Next, dab it dry with a cloth without touching the cutting edge and stow it open to dry completely. Between two applications there should be at least 48 hours so that the burr can realign itself. If you are not going to use your razor for a longer period of time, apply a bit of acid-free oil to it. You can find more information here.
